Which Gym and Health Club Perks Are Worth Paying For

If you are looking at purchasing a gym or health club membership, then you have probably already discovered that it can be a jungle out there. There are many different types of gyms, and prices vary from gym to gym. Before you sign up for a membership, here a few things you'll want to consider.

The basics

Location, location, location. The truth is that if your gym is too much trouble to get to, you won't. Try to find a gym that is located near your home, workplace or a shopping center you visit often.

Time. Hours of operation are crucial, especially if you have an unpredictable schedule. Make certain you find out when the gym is open and if your needs will be met on your time schedule.

Care. Make sure that all equipment is well maintained, up to date and clean.

Atmosphere. The staff of the gym should be knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and the patrons should be courteous.

What type of gym meets your needs?

With gyms popping up in every neighborhood, finding a gym is not a problem. Choosing the right one for you, however, is a little more difficult. There are many different types of gyms for you to consider.

Traditional gyms offer different kinds of equipment and an instructor who provides guidance for new gym members, with no special perks. They usually offer lower monthly fees and members pretty much come and go as they please. There are basically two options: You can pay an initial joining fee and a separate month-to-month fee, or you pay by the year. Yearly membership fees are often discounted, while month-to-month membership fees cost an average of $50 a month.

Specialty studios can be a good option for those interested in focusing on a specific activity, there's probably a studio just for you. Among the most popular are those for aerobics, yoga, Pilates, spinning, dance and martial arts. Other specialty areas include centers for nutritional advice, weight loss and weight management. These types of centers are becoming very popular and are generally located in larger cities.

Athletic and sports clubs also have become very popular. People see them as a way to not only develop healthy bodies, but also to add a little variety and fun to their lives. These clubs are usually family friendly and offer many areas of sports such as a basketball court, swimming pool, volleyball court, tennis court and others. Other services range from saunas and steam rooms to personal trainers and massages. Many also offer exclusive day spas.

Joining a gym of this type is a little more complicated, as there are many different membership packages available. A basic gym membership will get you access to the exercise machines but does not include full use of the facilities or services. For a little more money, you can purchase a medium grade package that includes use of the sports facilities.

Premium gym memberships are available for a price. If you are looking for an all-inclusive gym membership with all the perks, then this is the package for you. Spend an hour working out followed by a personal massage, a soak in the Jacuzzi, a day in the spa, or enjoy a light lunch at the in-house restaurant and bar. You will have full access to the equipment, classes and sports facilities, plus all the pampering you desire.

Is it worth the cost?

With so many gym membership options available, how do you decide if the added perks are worth paying for? Since everyone is different, no one can really answer that for you. It all boils down to a personal choice. If you just want a gym where you can pop in and pop out, save yourself some money and choose a basic gym membership. If you are looking to get a good workout, have a little fun or be pampered beyond your wildest dreams, then go for the gold.
