If, however, the subject matter is almost anything else, chances are you won't be seeing any old faces or old bodies on your screen. Evidently the public doesn't want to have to look at aged people. Just ask some of the t.v. news anchors who have been let go from their jobs for obscure reasons which probably had a lot more to do with their ages than anything else.

This is a very undesirable mind set that seems to be afflicting our country and it is extremely detrimental to the self image of millions of "regular" people as it reinforces the widely held view that aging is something to fear and dread. Obviously, no one is excited about the prospects of losing their sight or their hearing or having reduced mental and physical abilities but that nonetheless is part of the aging process and that is what our bodies were designed to do; to be born, to grow and mature, to reach our prime and then begin the decline that eventually leads to our demise. This will happen no matter how much time or money we spend on trying to chase the reality away. But just as we should try to do with everything else we encounter in life, why not try to accept the inevitable and make the best of it. There are some good things that can happen in our later years, often people become more aware of the precious nature of time itself and more cognizant of the world around them and appreciative of the gift of life. Relationships that often took a back seat during the hustle bustle years of trying to get ahead now regain the prominent position they deserve in our hearts and minds.

The obsession that our society has with looking young and beautiful has been the cause of much frustration, despair and depression to many people, mainly women. One can be made to feel less than acceptable if they do not resemble the trim and beautiful imagine of womanhood projected in magazines, on t.v. and on the big screen. Get real. How many people naturally look like that? It's fine to want to look as nice as we can without going to the extreme of thinking we need to change everything about ourselves from our hair, our complexions, our teeth, our noses, our chins, etc. Where does it end and why is it necessary in the first place?

It's a sad commentary indeed that in a country where people are losing their jobs in near record numbers and when the figures for foreclosures are going through the roof, we have been spending in the neighborhood of $160 BILLION dollars a year to "look good". An article in the Economist from a few years back reported that American's spend more money on beauty than they do on education.

Something is very wrong with this picture. This pattern doesn't show much sign of slowing down bur rather appears to be escalating. That is a frightening analysis. In a world where there is so much hurting and so much need it would seem that there are far better places to spend our hard earned dollars than on the constant battle against aging and looking less than perfect.

One can only hope we'll wake up and join the fight against the real enemies of mankind; ignorance, intolerance and greed, but I for one am not all that optimistic.

Is Cheerleading a Sport? - Quinnipiac Cheerleading Argument Brought to Courts

In one of the stranger court battles Connecticut has seen in the last few decades, jurors are now deciding whether or not cheerleading is a sport.

Cheerleading was begun a century ago as a pep league of men who jumped around singing songs to cheer on their college's football team. Today, it's morphed into something all its own: cheerleaders spending as much time (if not more) with national and international tumbling competitions as well as the usual cheering for men's teams.

The argument began when Quinnipiac University eliminated their women's volleyball team in favor of cheerleading. The move made it official: cheerleading was a more important sport to the Hamden, Connecticut school.

The volley ballers did not take this lightly! The team filed a lawsuit against the school, who claims that keeping cheerleading while giving volleyball the axe was done for cost saving reasons. An 11-man volleyball team costs $20,000 more per year than the $50,000 budgeted for 40 cheerleaders.

Both teams are eagerly awaiting a verdict in the court case that began opening statements today. Volleyball players are looking to Title 9 to support their re-instatement. The law requires schools to provide equal opportunities for men and women to compete in sports that involve practice and organized competition overseen by coach(es). Cheerleading is going against some age-old stereotypes to prove in this case that they are, in fact, their own, independent sport. Volleyball players say that a men's team would never have been dismantled and are fighting sexism in the University.

Though Quinnipiac is a private school they do receive some public funds and are therefore subject to Title IX.

What Does Adventure In Travel Mean To You?

Since I live in the United States, my first overseas travel -- to the totally exotic and beautiful part of the world known as Indonesia -- was quite an adventure for me. Traveling alone, going through Customs and Immigration of a foreign country halfway around the world from "home", was an adventure in itself. After all, arrival is when the real fun begins on such a trip.

It started right at the airport, at the Immigration desk. My Indonesian friend had told me ahead of time not to give anyone money for anything when I arrived -- to carry my own bags, etc. I was very conscientious about this, and had no problems. But the Immigration desk is "official government". I wanted no problems there. So, when the girl behind the counter hesitated on stamping and returning my passport, I wondered. When she asked me how much money I had with me, I was the one who hesitated. I asked her if there was a reason for needing to know, and how much I was expected to have. She simply repeated her question. A flash of recognition hit me then. So I raised my voice a bit (so her co-workers at the desks either side of her could hear), and said, "Oh, do you mean for a bribe?" Work continued at the other desks without interruption, and the girl simply said "yes". I then told her I thought I had $10. She said, "OK, I need you to give it to me". I did, and received my stamped passport back immediately. Later, I was told by my friend that I had handled it all wrongly, and I learned my first lesson about international travel.

While I was only on the island of Java (no, I didn't go to Bali), traveling around old (and new) Jakarta to experience the flavor of the culture in various ways with local friends was amazing! This was the city of which I'd read adventure tales many times in my youth, while I was only an "armchair traveler"; (and which was formerly spelled with a "D" as the first letter - Djakarta). It was an adventure conversing with locals in my then non-existent Indonesian, and their broken "pigeon" English. It was an adventure going to the hill country outside Bandung to see the tea plantations and the terraced rice fields; and to interact with the people in a small community with whom I was invited to play volleyball (yes, really! -- and they had the net and ball, with a decent dirt court!). Volleyball games, and people who knew how to play, were perhaps least among my expectations to find in the small community of a totally different culture, in "the middle of nowhere" in a largely third world country halfway around the world from home. Volleyball is, after all, a game created in the U.S A.!

So, what do you think of when I say those three words together -- "international, travel, and adventure"? As mentioned above, and elsewhere in my musings on the subject, simply stepping across a border of another country can be adventurous; but what about beyond that? Does adventure combined with travel conjure images of an African safari in your mind? Does it possibly involve heli-skiing from some of the otherwise inaccessible slopes of the tallest mountains in Canada? Or is your adventure one of exploring newly discovered caves under the jungles of South America?

You will, from time to time, of course, find all of those, and more, right here. But there are many kinds of adventure in travel, and we may even explore a bit of the romantic kind from time to time. (Hey, this isn't only for the guys!)
